This was an interesting run.  I got caught up in a meeting and noticed the clock was 5 minutes past 12.

I quickly checked outside and everyone was ready to go.  I did have a moment of thought where I could back out, settle into my chair and close my eyes for a moment however that’s not an option.  I just know how much better I will feel after I get some exercise and it’s so much fun hanging out with this crew I just couldn’t back out.

I said that they should start and I’ll change quick and catch up to the pack.  I didn’t think that I would be that long, however….I had to SPRINT a couple KM to get to the pack.

I kept wondering where they were at and if they took a different route because I was literally sprinting in Zone 3 HR solid and could not find anyone for 20 minutes.  I was also in full compression head to toe so I wasn’t lollygagging.

FAST!  That group is quick.  I caught up with them 1/2 way through the run.

Of course we have Torsten at the front with a trail of fire behind him.

Here is what you look like when you miss workouts over the Christmas holidays and continue to miss workouts in January.

blah!

blah!

I could have mentioned to Hanna (my awesome running friend) that I haven’t been motivated over the last few weeks, that I was really struggling to get out of bed in the morning.  That I completely fell off the wagon, got submersed in work, gained some pounds and was feeling pretty low.  But no, I didn’t.  I kept it all internal, felt I could fix it myself and days passed, and days passed, and workouts are missed and I grew more and more tired.
I’ve been waiting for that light to click on, couldn’t motivate myself.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve been pretty discouraged lately, been pretty hard on myself making the cycle worse.  I’ve ignored my training log, my coach, my meal planning.  I’ve misplaced my balance and my schedule is all messed up.
So where do I start.
It all started today, with a simple gesture from a friend.  “Did you bring your running gear today?”
I haven’t really run in a while or done anything consistant since the week before Christmas.  I’ve put on some weight and feel really out of shape.
But it all starts with one step and sometimes the help from a friend.
this step was painful!

this step was painful!

Hanna and I ran, she encouraged me the whole way.  We talked about so many things.  She really is amazing.  This support is exactly what I needed to get out of this funk, to remember how much fun I have when I am working out, how I feel like I’ve accomplished so much, and to have fun.  Like chasing ducks wearing Firewall tights.

DUCKS!

Sometimes we get caught up in one area of our life and lose that balance, how do we stay on track and maintain an overall wellbeing.  I can see myself starting to veer off the track, I was just not able to pull myself back up on the rails.

Thank you Hanna, for being you!

Oct 11

This will be my first long run Sunday.  I’m going to see if I can go out for an hour and run continually.  There’s a lot of nice areas for me to go.

The run really clears my mind, probably one of the only times of the day where I’m not continually thinking or planning out anything.  Very peacefull.  Connects me back with the actual world, not the cell phone ringing off the hook, 400 emails to get to, rushing around taking care of a tight timeline request.  It’s a nice break to just breathe and hear silence.

What is your favorite part about running?  What do you think about?  Or do you feel the same type of peace that I do?

Weather is going to be very cold.  I’ll have to layer and make sure I wear my Helium jacket.  Will start with a base layer of FinoTech and then a layer of MidZero, best combination.  I could use a Wallaroo layer but I prefer the two layers, just my own personal preference.  Gloves, yes!  Must bring gloves.  Then I’ll be set, and watch it will be sunny and hot.

I’d rather be fully prepared and tie something around my waist rather than be out in the cold missing something.  As long as I’m wearing R+R socks I’ll be fine, they keep me upright and I haven’t had any shin splints, recovery has been very quick.

What are your favorite SUGOI items or which items do you prefer on those layering days?  An even better question, what was your first SUGOI item?  I remember mine.  Jacket, amazing jacket called the Stellar.  Lasted me 6years!  Would have lasted longer but I grew out of it.  ;)

A must check out that has helped me a lot is @coachprs blogs, has really great advice, tips and training information.   http://prsfit.com/index.php Next week he will be helping me with heart rate.  I’m pretty excited to learn more about it and see what I can do!

Almost at the half way point on the run
Almost at the half way point on the run

Just looking at some pictures I took on a run with Mei one day.

We really live in a gorgeous city.

The scenery really helps when you start up running again, it’s a necessary distraction that helps you focus on moving forward and not MY LEGS WANT TO STOP!

I’ve been thinking about the last 10 or so years and that we did have a lot of fun adventures as a family.

Went to the beach a lot, took trips up to the Island, Parksville, Victoria, Nanaimo. Did a lot of outdoor activity but didn’t really go to Stanley Park that much. The seawall is such an amazing area.

The actual park is phenominal. I went through it last weekend for the first time in years and didn’t realize how amazing that it actually is. It’s pretty magnificent, and right next door. Will have to take a few more trips over there and train.

I’m really liking the loop that we are doing on the run, it’s comfortable and we get back in time from the lunch break perfectly.  It’s not crowded at all and there is a lot to look at, it’s also nice and flat which is great for me while I’m getting back into shape.  My clothes are starting to fit like a parachute which is bizarre, it’s so strange.  I’m so used to how my body looked almost two months ago.
Also an amazing blog written from @IronBrandon Oct 8th, must check it out.  http://brandonsmarathon.com/

I really enjoyed this blog and it’s helping me get through some of those tough run days.  Will check out that book recommendation as well for total heart rate training.   It’s fascinating to learn about heart rate and lactic threshold.  Changes the focus for sure when you are out there.

I can’t even remember the last time I went swimming, been so focused on the run.  Maybe I should go for a quick swim this weekend and just have some fun, is my absolute favorite part of triathlon.  Love the swim.  Well….indoor swim, outdoor/ocean….that’s another story….

Apparently running brings out the best and worst of emotions… I hit a wall where I had to sit down and think about goals – realistic goals. I learned a lot about myself and about this training process today.

Sep 23

I was nervous and excited to go on a run with Hanna at lunchtime.  Mostly nervous because #1 I was wearing shorts in front of the staff.  I haven’t worn shorts in 8 years because my legs have lost their girth and seem to have developed a nice cushy spot around my knees that looks like Yorkshire pudding puffs.

I wasn’t sure if she would want to slow down her run as I have been running for 5 mins and walking for 2mins, haven’t felt that comfortable running consistently at all.  Didn’t want to push myself too hard because I usually push myself way too hard and get injured.  That’s the last thing I want is to get on track and end up with an injury.  So I changed, got brave, walked around in my 42K split shorts.

If I’m going to go out in public in shorts I might as well go for gold and wear split shorts that are super short.  Face my demons head on!

Off we went.  Right off the bat Hanna said that we were not going to walk run and my heart sunk.  I panicked.  Then she said that it’s better if we go at a super slow pace consistently rather than stopping and starting to see how I was feeling.  I was so nervous and then we started.  I kept saying, “If I feel like I’m hurt we will stop right?” and she reassured me that I could do it.   She had faith in me and knew that I had been exercising for a few weeks now and could do a 4K lap around the Cambie bridge.  4K????  ARE YOU KIDDING?  I started sweating.

The run down the hill was a rough start but not painful.  She supported me the whole way and talked about her experiences running while she was at school and running with others.  She was so positive, so optimistic, so encouraging there was no way I could stop!  We got to Science World and she distracted me, “look at the scenery, Vancouver is gorgeous!  Look a seal in the water!  We live in a great place!” and told me we were almost at the ½ way mark.  HALF WAY????  That means I just ran 2K are you kidding????!!!!  If I can go half way then I’ve already done more than I have in years.  I was working on my breath and she coached me the entire time.

We made it half way, we made it to the end!  I really could not have done it without her support.  She was so inspirational, so supportive.  I wouldn’t have pushed myself or believed in myself if Hanna wasn’t there by my side to show me that I could do it.  I can’t wait to run with her again!
